PMHNP Duties

  • Comprehensive Psychiatric Assessment: Conduct thorough initial and ongoing psychiatric evaluations of incarcerated individuals to diagnose mental health conditions, including mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, substance use disorders, and trauma-related conditions. This includes reviewing medical and psychiatric histories, conducting mental status examinations, and gathering collateral information where appropriate and available.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment Planning: Formulate accurate DSM-5/ICD-10 diagnoses and develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans tailored to the patient’s needs and the correctional setting’s parameters. This includes setting realistic and measurable goals.
  • Psychopharmacological Management: Prescribe, administer, and monitor psychotropic medications. This involves initiating new medications, adjusting dosages, managing side effects, and ensuring adherence within the facility’s medication distribution system. Requires thorough knowledge of drug interactions and contraindications.
  • Individual and Group Therapy: Provide various forms of psychotherapy and counseling to individuals and groups, utilizing therapeutic modalities appropriate for the correctional population (e.g., CBT, DBT-informed skills, motivational interviewing, crisis intervention).
  • Crisis Intervention and Management: Respond to acute psychiatric crises, including suicidal ideation/attempts, acute psychosis, agitation, and behavioral disturbances. Implement de-escalation techniques and collaborate with security staff to ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Disorders Treatment: Assess and manage substance use disorders, often co-occurring with other mental health conditions. May involve medication-assisted treatment (MAT) protocols where available and appropriate.
  • Chronic Care Management: Provide ongoing management for patients with chronic and persistent mental illnesses, ensuring continuity of care and monitoring for relapse or exacerbation of symptoms.
  • Accurate and Timely Documentation: Maintain comprehensive, accurate, and confidential electronic health records (EHR) or paper charts, documenting all patient encounters, assessments, treatment plans, medication changes, and progress notes in accordance with facility policies and legal requirements.
  • Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with a diverse team, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, registered nurses, medical physicians/PAs, correctional officers, and case managers to coordinate patient care and ensure a holistic approach.
  • Consultation: Provide psychiatric consultation to other healthcare providers and correctional staff regarding inmate mental health concerns, behavioral management strategies, and appropriate levels of care.
  • Participation in Treatment Team Meetings: Actively participate in regular interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient cases, review treatment plans, and make collaborative decisions regarding patient care and disposition.
  • Report Writing: Prepare psychiatric reports and summaries as needed for internal reviews, transfers, or legal proceedings (e.g., parole board hearings), under the supervision or in collaboration with a psychiatrist if required by facility policy or state regulations.
  • Other job duties as assigned

PMHNP Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited educational institution
  • Licensed as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) by the State in which the position is located. The license MUST be in good standing
  • 1+ year of relevant Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) experience
